The frustrating part is that it\u2019s rarely random: there are a handful of causes, and almost all of them can be fixed. Here they are, from most to least common.<\/p>\n<h2>1. The phone closes the connection when it locks<\/h2>\n<p>To save battery, iOS and Android suspend apps in the background and close their network sockets. When you unlock the phone, the old connection is dead. This isn\u2019t something you can turn off, so the real fix is on the app side: it should reconnect the moment you open it again, before you tap a button. <a href=\"https:\/\/remotapp.com\/\">RemotApp<\/a> was built around this: it reconnects as soon as you return to the app and resends the command if the first attempt hits a dead connection.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Local Network permission is off (iPhone)<\/h2>\n<p>Since iOS 14, apps need permission to talk to devices on your home network. If you tapped \u201cDon\u2019t Allow\u201d by accident, the app can\u2019t see the TV at all. Fix: Settings \u203a Privacy &amp; Security \u203a Local Network, and turn the app on.<\/p>\n<h2>3. The TV got a new IP address<\/h2>\n<p>Routers hand out IP addresses that can change after a restart or power cut. If the app only remembers the old address, it loses the TV. Fixes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reserve a fixed IP for the TV in your router (DHCP reservation).<\/li>\n<li>Use an app that identifies the TV by its unique ID and rediscovers it when the address changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4. The TV switches Wi-Fi off in standby<\/h2>\n<p>If the TV drops off the network when it\u2019s off, the app can\u2019t reach it to turn it on. Enable your brand\u2019s network standby option: Samsung \u201cPower On with Mobile\u201d, LG \u201cMobile TV On\u201d, Roku \u201cFast TV Start\u201d. Guest networks, isolation and VPNs<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guest Wi-Fi<\/strong> usually isolates devices from each other. Put both phone and TV on the main network.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AP\/client isolation<\/strong> settings on some routers do the same on the main network. Turn them off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>VPNs<\/strong> on the phone can hide your home network. Disable it or allow local network access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>6. The TV forgot the permission<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Samsung:<\/strong> if the TV keeps asking to \u201cAllow\u201d the device, go to Settings \u203a General \u203a External Device Manager \u203a Device Connection Manager and set Access Notification to First Time Only.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LG:<\/strong> on some models, the \u201cLG Connect Apps\u201d option must stay enabled under the network settings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roku:<\/strong> keep \u201cControl by mobile apps\u201d enabled under Settings \u203a System \u203a Advanced system settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>7. Aggressive battery saving (Android)<\/h2>\n<p>Some Android phones kill apps and Wi-Fi activity very aggressively. Set the remote app to \u201cUnrestricted\u201d in its battery settings.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Weak Wi-Fi at the TV<\/h2>\n<p>A TV at the edge of your Wi-Fi coverage drops packets, which feels like lag or disconnection. If you can, use Ethernet for the TV or add a mesh node nearby.<\/p>\n<h2>Checklist<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Same Wi-Fi network, not guest, no VPN.<\/li>\n<li>Local Network permission on (iPhone).<\/li>\n<li>Fixed IP for the TV in the router.<\/li>\n<li>Network standby enabled on the TV.<\/li>\n<li>An app that reconnects automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most disconnections come from three things: the phone closes the connection when it locks, the TV gets a new IP address from the router, or the TV turns its Wi-Fi off in standby.
